After a couple months of inactivity (an extended vacation), I am displaying a new find from a fairly recent auction. It was listed as a Constans II solidus from Constantinople, Sear 938, which could not be further from the truth. (The 'I' in the reverse field was the first tip off!) In reality, this is a new find for Constans II struck in Syracuse. So for a little under $300, I was able to purchase a previously unknown variety of Constans II from Syracuse, struck somewhere around 642-645.
There are a few give aways to products from Syracuse from this period. The first is the letter formation of the A's on the reverse, with a long tail on the right side. Second, these pieces almost always have reverse legends that end with a theta (or a theta plus another letter.) Lastly, there are almost always extra dots placed at the end of the reverse legend, reverse field, etc. This piece with a Dot under the CONOB is the first piece that I know of that uses that placement of a dot. The piece weighs 4.41 grams. For a similar piece (with a dot at the end of the reverse legend), look at Ratto 1511 (also illustrated as MIB-III, 81-2).
