Mezezius
Usurper in Sicily 668 through 669

A noble man who took part in the assassination of Constans II in Syracuse, Mezezius was proclaimed emperor by the army in the later part of 668.  The news of Constans II assassination did not reach Constantinople until November or December, where pressure as placed on the exarch of Syracuse to proclim Constantine IV, son of Constans II as emperor.  At that time Mezezius was deposed and exiled.  The coinage was thought of be irregular products of Constantine IV until the last decade where Mezezius took his rightful place in history.  The reference numbers for Dunbarton Oaks and Hahn are for those of Constantine IV.
