After a break for a few interesting varieties, it is now time to get back to rarities. A solidus of Michael III ("The Drunkard"), 842 - 867, with a Christ portrait on the obverse and facing images of Michael and his mother Theodora on the reverse. This is the middle issue of Michael III (843 - 856), while he was still under the regency of his mother due to his accession to the throne at age 2. This is also the first revival of the usage of Christ's portrait on a coin since Justinian II (711). While, the reign was long lasting, all coinage (3 different types) from Constantinople appear to be somewhat limited in production. This piece is one of about 30-35 known examples and weighs 4.41g. This piece was part of the Conte collection ans is recognized as one of the best examples of the type.
