Another classic Byzantine rarity, a histamenon nomisma (a thin flan solidus) of Michael VI, Stratioticus, 1056 - 1057. Another piece from an emperor of a relatively short reign (10 days more than a year). This coin has the bust of Christ on the obverse with the Virgin Mary crowning the emperor on the reverse. While similar to a very common coin of Romanus III, there are two major differences. The first is that Christ is only an upper body bust and is not seated on a throne and the second is the legends on the reverse. This piece is one of approximately 20-25 known and is amongst the finest known. This piece weighs 4.32 grams and is on a slightly oblong planchet.
