A recent find in an auction that has ancient coins every now and then, but the firm is not really known for high quality ancients. This 20 Siliquae of Phocas almost missed my eye (as did several other important coins) and I was able to purchase it for about 10-15% of its true worth. The obverse looks like the common Phocas Solidus that there are many thousands of (Sear 620, DOC 7, MIB 9), but the difference is on the reverse! In the exergue (the area below the line), there are the letters OBXX (loosely interpreted as quality gold in the quantity of 20) and the Angel is only holding a globus instead of a globus with a Cross on top. Hahn knew of five pieces (DOC 14, MIB 21), four from the above officinae (E) and one from the officinae of Theta. I have also seen two other pieces in the last ten years that were significantly less quality (and therefore I did not purchase them.) This piece weighs 3.59g and has some lightness to the strike of the left obverse and corresponding right reverse legends. Also, the reverse is off center by about 10-15%. However, with all of this said, this coin is still one of the finer, if not the finest of the 8 to 10 pieces known for this denomination from Phocas. Once again, there are bargains out there if you continue to look and have already done your homework.
