October 1998 Coin of the Month

A lovely solidus of Justinian I from Rome with ROMOB in exergue on the reverse.  This piece shows the high relief portraits and fine engraving style that is typical of Rome.  There is some encrustation on the obverse at 10:00 O'clock, but to me this shows the originality of the piece and is not a distraction.  The piece weighs 4.46g .

Octobers 1998 Imitative Piece of the Month

An Ostrogothic solidus in the name of Justinian I.  Notice the retrograde C in CONOB in exergue on the reverse. A totaly different character coin from the one above, yet probably produced within 20 years of each other and possibly both at Rome.  This piece weighs 4.52g.
