Another late Roman piece (by popular demand since this part of the collection has yet to be placed on the web). An extremely rare solidus of Eugenius, 393-394, struck in Milan. This piece's RIC reference is Volume IX, Page 82, Number 28. It is one of only a hand few of pieces known for this emperor from any mint. My tracings of auction catalogs, only show three different pieces (this one including) from all mints being sold in the last 30+ years. (Note 11/1/99 - Three additional specimans from London, Ravenna and Milan Mints are included in auction sales this December.) The Garrett and the Hunt collections did not have examples of a solidus of Eugenius. The pedigree on this piece is Leu Sale 65, Lot 512 - May 1996 and Jean Elsen Sale 57, Lot 1914. This piece weighs 4.46g and exhibits slight strike weakness (does not appear to have wear as the weakness is not on the highest areas of the coin, and the coin retains full luster.), for a net grade of about extra fine.
