September 2001 Coin of the Month

Just the name Licinia Eudoxia is enough to raise eyebrows from most late Roman numismatists as her coinage has always been regarded as the ultimate in rarity.  Yet, here is a coin that makes prior known pieces seem insignificant.  A premarriage (to Valentinian III) solidus of Licinia Eudoxia.

Its issue is similar to the coinage of Galla Placidia and Justa Grata Honoria, with the right facing female bust with the Hand of God above and the SALVS REI PVBLICAE reverse.  These were struck in Ravenna from 426 through 432.    The Cross on the shoulder is indicative of a piece produced somewhere around 432, if chronological comparisons can be made with the coinage of Galla Placidia and/or Justa Grata Honoria.

It is my contention that this piece is the first issue for Licinia Eudoxia and was issued by Valentinian III/Galla Placidia in Ravenna to document/commemorate the intended betrothal of Licinia Eudoxia by Theodosius II (his daughter) to Valentinian III.  The event was seen at the time as the reunification of the Western and Eastern Empires and therefore was regarded as highly important.

This piece weighs 4.47 grams and has a normal die axis.
